The Proboscis monkey of Borneo

The proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) or long-nosed monkey is a reddish-brown arboreal Old World monkey that is endemic to the south-east Asian island of Borneo.

This species of monkey is easily identifiable because of its unusually large nose.
Actually, proboscis monkeys have the longest noses of all primates. Although females already have a very large nose for a primate, the nose of males is so long it often hangs over their mouth, exceeding 10cm in length. In elderly animals, it can reach 17.5cm (a quarter of the body length). Although its function is not known for sure, it is likely to be a visual signal used in mate choice. The male vocalises through the nose with a kee honk sound.

With their large pendulous nose, giant bellies, and permanent erect penis, the proboscis monkey has one of the most unusual appearances of all primates.

Proboscis monkeys feed on leaves, seeds, fruits, flowers and a very small proportion of animal prey.

Proboscis monkeys eat fruits and leaves, and in one area regurgitate and chew that cud again.

The monkey also goes by the Malay name monyet belanda (“Dutch monkey”), or even orang belanda (“Dutchman”), as Indonesians remarked that the Dutch colonisers often had similarly large bellies and noses.

Proboscis monkeys can only be found in Borneo and inhabit mangrove, peat swamp, and riverine forests. Although they are mostly arboreal (tree-living), proboscis monkeys are good swimmers and have the most aquatic lifestyle among primates. They usually live in a harem which comprises one adult male and one to eight females and their offspring. The males are much larger, weigh more than twice as much as females, and have an erect penis almost permanently.

Another striking characteristic of Proboscis monkeys are their large pot bellies, making them look permanently pregnant. Their bellies are so enourmous because of a very special digestive system which consists of cellulose digesting bacteria, enabling them to eat leaves and unripe fruit. Their stomach is so large, its contents can make up to one quarter of their body weight.

Proboscis monkeys generally live in groups composed of one adult male, some adult females and their offspring. All-male groups may also exist. Some individuals are solitary, mostly males.

The diet of most cucumbers consists of plankton and decaying organic matter found in the sea. One way they might get a supply of food is to position themselves in a current where they can catch food that flow by with their tentacles when they open. Another way is to sift through the bottom sediments using their tentacles.

Many of these are gathered for human consumption and some species are cultivated in aquaculture systems. The harvested product is variously referred to as trepang, bêche-de-mer or balate.

Because of their strong commercial value in Asian markets – where they’re sold in dried form as “beche-de-mer” – they have been harvested so heavily in some areas that remaining stocks could have trouble breeding.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has tightened regulations for trading sea cucumber to prevent over exploitation and encourage spawning of the species. Sea cucumbers cannot be transported without a Local Transport Permit issued by the Provincial Fishery Office or a fisheries quarantine officer. It is also prohibited to sell and transport undersized sea cucumbers – those that are only five centimeters in length – except in dried form.

Banana slug

Banana slug is a common name for three North American species of terrestrial slug in the genus Ariolimax. These slugs are often yellow in color and are sometimes spotted with brown, like a ripe (or overripe) banana. Individual slugs will change colors with alterations in food consumption, light exposure, and moisture levels. Color may also indicate whether a slug is healthy, injured, or what age they are.

Ariolimax columbianus is native to the forest floors along North America’s Pacific coastal coniferous rainforest belt (including redwood forests) which stretches from Southeastern Alaska to Santa Cruz, California.

Slugs use two pairs of tentacles to sense their environment. The larger, upper pair, termed “eyestalks,” are used to detect light or movement. The second, lower pair are used to detect chemicals. The tentacles can retract and extend themselves to avoid damage. If a predator bites off a tentacle, the slug can grow a new one.
Banana slugs are detritivores, or decomposers. They process leaves, animal droppings, and dead plant material, and then recycle them into soil humus.

The slime also contains pheromones to attract other slugs for mating. Slugs are simultaneous hermaphrodites, and reproduce by exchanging sperm with their mate. They produce up to 75 translucent eggs, which are laid in a log or on leaves. Slugs mate and lay eggs throughout the year. The adults provide no further care for their eggs beyond finding a suitable hiding spot.

Banana slugs have been used as food by Yurok Indians of the North Coast and by German immigrants in the 19th and early 20th centuries. A yearly festival and contest is held at Russian River (California) including slug races and a contest for recipes – though, even when fed corn meal to purge them or soaked in vinegar to remove slime, the slugs’ flavor is not always well regarded, and the most successful entries are often those in which the flavor is unnoticeable.

How to eat the Giant Penis Clam (aka Geoduck)

Geoduck is a prized Pacific Northwest seafood. The large, meaty siphon is prized for its savory flavor and crunchy texture. Geoduck is regarded by some as an aphrodisiac because of its phallic shape.
These clams were not fished commercially until the 1970s, but in recent decades a huge demand from Asian markets has developed, and the clams are now farmed as well as being harvested in the wild.
It is very popular in China, where it is considered a delicacy, mostly eaten cooked in a fondue-style Chinese hot pot. In Korean cuisine, geoducks are eaten raw with spicy chili sauce, sautéed, or in soups and stews. In Japan, geoduck is prepared as raw sashimi, dipped in soy sauce and wasabi. On Japanese menus in cheaper sushi restaurants, geoduck is sometimes substituted for Tresus keenae and labeled mirugai or mirukuigai.
how to cook geoduck

The flesh of geoduck tastes like a cross between your average fan-shape shelled clam – say, a Littleneck – and the sweetest scallop you’ve ever tasted, with texture ranging from a cross between firm jello and oyster on the shell end becoming progressively firmer toward the *ahem* protruding end, otherwise known as its siphon or neck, to where it’s downright crunchy at the tip.

Before you get started have a pot of hot tap water or boiled water ready. Then cut through the tough ligament thingies attaching the clam to the shell on both sides

and pry the shells apart

At this point, give the geoduck a good and thorough rinse in cold water. If it smells like anything but fresh ocean water, it’s probably not so fresh.
When you pull the body of the clam away from the shell, you’re going to find this thing that looks like bwalls, and well, it is a gonad, so it’s basically bwalls. People tend to discard this part, but it tastes sweetly of the ocean and makes a wonderful stock for seafood based soups and stews.
how to cook geoduck

Once the gonad is removed, you have the mantle (the fleshy part that was covered by the shell) and the siphon (the fleshy part outside the shell), and it is all covered by an outer rubbery *sheath* called a periostracum. To remove that sheath, dunk the clam in that hot water for 15 to 20 seconds. Doing this will not only facilitate the removal, but it’ll firm up the flesh and make it easier to slice.

In the front, the siphon, in the back the mantle, both completely edible.

Wash away any sand or dirt that’s accumulated in siphon and mantle.

You can serve them with choh gochoojahng (Korean style), wasabi and shoyu (Japanese style), and paper thin slices of lemon.

Penis Snake – neither penis nor snake

A group of engineers building a dam in the Madeira River in Brazil’s northern state of Rondonia discovered an Atretochoana eiseltiis, better known as a caecilian, which some people might know as a limbless amphibian, but the creature pictured above is a penis snake.

penis snake

Six of the eyeless creatures – a family of “blind snake” – were found at the time.
Despite looking like snakes, they aren’t reptiles and are more closely related to salamanders and frogs. We think the animal breathes through its skin, and probably feeds on small fish and worms, but there is still nothing proven. The Amazon is a box of surprises when it comes to reptiles and amphibians. There are still much more to be discovered.
Very little is known about their diet, but they are described as having strong skulls and pointed snouts for burrowing. They have strong muscles adapted to pushing through the ground. Their skeleton and deep muscles act as pistons inside the skin, allowing the animal to anchor its rear end in position and force its head downwards and then pull the rest of the body after in waves. They swim like eel in water.

penis snake

Informally, the new Amazon River dweller is being called a “floppy snake,” but media outlets are having a little fun coming up with names like penis snake and man-aconda.

The tasmanian echidna’s four-headed penis

Echidnas, sometimes known as spiny anteaters, belong to the family Tachyglossidae. Echidnas are monotremes (mammals that lay eggs).
Echidnas are 30 cm to 45 cm in length and weigh between 2 kg and 5 kg with Tasmanian animals being larger than their Australian mainland counterparts.

The body, with the exception of the underside, face and legs, is covered with cream coloured spines. These spines, which reach 50 mm in length, are in fact modified hairs. Insulation is provided by fur between the spines which ranges in colour from honey to a dark reddish-brown and even black. The fur of the Tasmanian subspecies is thicker and longer than that of echidnas in warmer mainland areas and therefore often conceals the spines.

Echidnas have no teeth. It crushes its insect food between horny plates on its tongue and the roof of its mouth. Their tongue is very long and sticky and is perfect for catching the hundreds of termites and ants that make up their staple diet.

The Tasmanian Echidna has one of the world’s strangest penises – it has four heads. The reason for this is still a mystery.

Tasmanian Echidna’s Four-Headed Penis
Photograph by Lucy Cooke

During mating, the heads on one side “shut down” and do not grow in size; the other two are used to release semen into the female’s two-branched reproductive tract. The heads used are swapped each time the mammal copulates. When not in use, the penis is retracted inside a preputial sac in the cloaca. The male echidna’s penis is 7 centimeters long when erect, and its shaft is covered with penile spines.
Tasmanian Echidna’s Four-Headed Penis

Two weeks after mating, a single fertilized egg is implanted in a rear-facing pouch that has developed on the female, where it is held for ten days before hatching. The young echidna, called a puggle, is then held in the pouch for two to three months before being expelled.

Puggles will stay within their mother’s den for up to a year before leaving.

Priapulida – penis worms

Priapulida (priapulid worms or penis worms) is a phylum of marine worms. They are named for their extensible spiny proboscis, which, in some species, may have a shape like that of a human penis.

penis worm

Penis worms live in the mud, which they eat, in comparatively shallow waters up to 90 metres. They feed on slow-moving invertebrates, such as polychaete worms.

Only sixteen extant species of priapulid worms are known.

penis worm

Priapulids are cylindrical worm-like animals, ranging from 0.5 to 20 centimetres in length, with a median anterior mouth quite devoid of any armature or tentacles. The body is divided into a main trunk or abdomen and a somewhat swollen proboscis region ornamented with longitudinal ridges.
